The hippo herd has one more member. Visitors could watch the baby from its very first moments

A baby amphibian was born right in the Hippo Lake in the pedestrian part of the SAFARI PARK area.

Visitors have had the opportunity to observe the new arrival since the moment it was born. This is only the second time in the history of the Safari Park that the public can observe such a small baby hippo.
According to close observations the female is taking a good care of her offspring, and the cub is thriving.

The best chance to observe the hippos is in the late afternoon. That's when these animals traditionally leave the comfort and safety of the water and head out to graze. The hippo's skin is very thick, but it's also very sensitive. In the hot summer sun, it would dry out, burn and crack. Therefore the twilight and nocturnal life of hippos. Visitors can enter SAFARI PARK until the end of the summer season (end of September-beginning of October depending on the weather, this year the season is scheduled to end on 6 October) until 6 pm, however, they can stay much longer - until 10 pm, when the last pavilions close. This opens up an ideal opportunity for evening hippo watching. The hippos will not stay in the lake until the very end of the summer season. They will move to their wintering grounds in few weeks, depending on the drop in temperatures.

The Hippo Lake is one of the largest and, according to many people, the most beautiful hippo exhibitions in Europe. SAFARI PARK is the only Czech zoo that has been breeding hippos for the last few years. Also in the European context, hippo breeding is becoming increasingly rare due to its difficulty. However, the situation of hippos in nature is not improving.
